Friends – I usually watch with admiration all the folks on @LinkedIn who have gotten a promotion or are starting a new role. Good on them, I think.
Then, my admiration is quickly overcome by my befuddlement when I see people start their post with “I am so humbled……to have received this promotion/new job/new opportunity etc etc”.
Why are people humbled by promotions? Let’s face it – the organisation had a need, they found the best person for the role – and he or she was promoted. The organisation did not do the person any favours – if anything, it’s the other way around.
I totally get it that people feel gratitude – and recognition – for being given a promotion. But, you would have earned this – and totally deserve it.
So unless you are getting an Order of Australia or some other significant recognition for going above and beyond – don’t be humbled. Be pleased. Be happy. Have gratitude. And remember – you deserved it.
