What makes you believe you have free will?

Over the years, as I have grown older, and wiser for sure, I have come to a conclusion.

As I look back over my life, I see the synchronicities and serendipitous events that have created the patterns in the tapestry of my life. Everything that happened that didn’t make sense back then, makes sense now.

Now I am not a religious person. And despite George Michael telling us this in the 90s, I don’t have faith.

But I am philosophically-inclined.

So previously I have written about our organisational restructure, and that I do not know whether I will have a role in the future of the organisation.

But I am in an ok place right now. Why?

  • Because I have had 8.5 years of the best years of my career here at the nbn.
  • I have learnt things that no MBA could teach me and have acquired experience in an accelerated timeframe that would have taken a lifetime in any other organisation.
  • I have made connections and have had the goodwill and respect of the smartest people I have ever known.
  • My career trajectory has risen exponentially from my having been here. And so I am truly grateful.

But my conclusion is this, friends.

Being philosophically inclined, I am of the belief that the universe, my creator, a higher power, whatever you want to call it – has a plan for my life.

And thus no human is in charge of my destiny. And so whatever the overall plan is that my creator has designed for me, human hands will set it in motion.

But these hands will not control my destiny. All they will be doing is acting as agents of the higher power.

And what will be, will be. And I am cool with that – because this belief helps get through the ups and downs of changes I can’t control. And all my past experiences have led to the belief that whatever happens, I will be fine.

And what of free will? Well, have you ever had free will when you have had a full bladder?
