Here is my number one rule for management.

Walk the floors!

If you want to:

  • Have your finger on the pulse of the organisation
  • Hear important information you would not otherwise
  • Be seen being visible
  • Hear about problems before they become an issue
  • Get the trust of your people because you ‘see’ them

Then you need to literally walk the floors of the organisation. And talk to your people.

And if your organisation is fully remote, then here is a solution for you.

Schedule a weekly, informal “Start of Week’ session with all your people, where you talk about:

  • what’s on your mind
  • what’s coming up for you that week
  • what’s happening in the organsiaiton
  • the training people should do
  •  the job of the week that people could apply for

and most important,

  • what you did on the weekend.

People leaders, let your people see the human side of you. The world has changed. You are losing the trust of your people.
