If you are serious about your self-development, get yourself an Accountability Buddy.

Left to our own devices, many of us would NOT do all the things that we know we should.

  • We wouldn’t go on that training
  • We wouldn’t demonstrate leadership behaviours
  • We wouldn’t stay on that diet or exercise plan
  • We wouldn’t update our CV or LinkedIn profile
  • We wouldn’t read as often as we could

So, here is the simplest and most effective thing you can do to ensure you hold yourself accountable.

Get someone else to hold you accountable. An accountability buddy.

Here is how to make it work:

  • Find a like-minded colleague or friend
  • Outline the things that you want to develop further (make it a manageable list)
  • Discuss this with your accountability buddy – including what success looks like
  • Each week, get together with your accountability buddy to discuss your progress on each of those objectives.  Just like a work status update, but this time, for your self-growth.

Having an accountability buddy means that if you fail to follow through on what you said you would,  the pain from having to tell this to your buddy will be a mitigation.

I know this works. Both my Rise and Shine colleagues @leanne and @clodagh have been doing this for nearly a year now. Neither of them wants to let the other down – and they have both grown as a result. Think about this friends – what’s stopping you from getting an accountability buddy? Your future success could depend on this.

This little green witch thanks you for reading this post, friends!
