Friends,
I live opposite a playground, and I have noticed that nearly all little girls carry around a doll, while little boys hold onto a small truck or Lego or figurine. Even when these children are walking somewhere with their parents, you will always see a toy held tightly.
But around age 5, these kids let go of these ‘comfort blanket’ or tokens. I suspect it’s because these familiar objects are no longer serving their needs.
It got me thinking.
Why do we, as adults hold onto things that no longer serve us, and may not even be true anymore?
Most importantly, why do we continue to believe these things? In speaking to people, I hear over and again:
- I’m not good at math
- I am not a people person
- I lack confidence
- I am too intense/loud/opinionated (insert appropriate adjective here).
People, assess what you think is true about yourself, and then determine where these beliefs came from. Then ask whether these beliefs and mindsets are serving you.
And if they are not, then you know what to do. You probably did it quite successfully when you were a new human – in your early childhood. No reason why you can’t do this again.
