I am here today because of all the rejections I’ve experienced.

Oftentimes when I contemplate the tapestry of my life, I realise how wonderful and truly blessed I am. I have the goodwill of my colleagues who are some of the smartest people I have had the pleasure of working with – and I get to work on things that are truly impactful, and purpose driven.

But friends, I did not plan to be here. I got to this point through a series of missteps, setbacks and multiple rejections.

I wanted to study creative writing at university – but could not get into the course I wanted. I fell into technology way back when the internet was just becoming a thing and people with my skills were needed. Content Manager was a job title – remember that anyone?

Then, over the course of years, I applied for multiple roles and only got the ones needed to get me to here. In addition, I have had at least 2 major setbacks in the workplace – one of which was a “shafting” – which is a (crude) Australian term for someone doing wrong by you.

But that setback got me to my current role – and I am so grateful and happy to have reached this point. So when I look back over my life, and I assess the contentment with which I show up in the world today, I accept the temporary pain and angst of the missteps, setbacks and rejections that ultimately got me here.

And so to all my future rejections – I will greet you like an old friend. You will guide me towards a better future.
