Do you know what value you bring to a role or to an organisation?

A friend and I were discussing our career plans for 2024, and we got to talking about the value we bring to organisations.

She struggled with that a bit – because she could not pinpoint how she stood apart from everyone else – and the value that she brought specifically.

So I asked her to think about this:

  1. What skills and experience sets her apart from all the other people doing similar roles?
  2. What qualities does she possess that others admire because they may not possess these?
  3. How does she combine the above to deliver outcomes that create an impact in the organisation?

She asked me what value I bring. Here is what I said:

  1. The quality of my ideas – I have fabulous ideas and creative ways of implementing these.
  2. The impact of my influence – I use my personality, my curiosity, care and interest in others to help drive outcomes.
  3. The energy I bring – I am terminally optimistic. I have learnt that this is a desirable trait in organisations – and so I ensure that in every interaction, people get the best version of me.

When I combine the above three attributes, it makes visible the value I bring.

So friends – do you know what value you bring to your organisation? How does this set you apart from others?
