So friends, yes I get it. Some names are really tricky to pronounce. Especially if those sounds are not part of the English language – or are uncommon.
But in the spirit of being inclusive, you owe it to others to make some sort of effort to learn how to pronounce names the way it’s meant to be.
If in a meeting, there is someone whose name you can’t pronounce, ask them this:
For future reference, how do I pronounce your name? 🤔 😊
It’s that simple. Sometimes, some people will give you a diminutive, or an anglicized version of their name. This is a cop out. Usually that person has made accommodations for lazy people, so you learn to say their name properly.
There is no sweeter sound than someone demonstrating effort to say someone’s name the way it’s meant to. Trust me on this – you will look super cool if you do so – plus it’s respectful. 😍 😚
By the way – here is a tip for people leaders. If you are giving a presentation and you need to name people, please work out how to say the names before you present. Mangling the names in public just makes you look… lazy.
