Every team will have one of these. The so-called troublemaker who:
📛 challenges decisions made
💠 questions a particular course of action
❇ calls out BS when they see it
✴ does not hesitate to ask tough questions
🔱 is always first to say why something won’t work, or is not a good idea.
More often than not, these people have been in the organisation for a long time and have seen many changes.
For many people leaders, these ‘troublemakers’ are to be tolerated with a deep sigh and an extra ounce of reserve from your stoicism reservoir.
But these folks have immense value to contribute – if you know how. Two options to consider:
Devil’s Advocate 👿
If you want to introduce a new idea, run a workshop and have the troublemaker be the reverse devil’s advocate.
Get everyone to say why the idea WON’T work, and then have the devil’s advocate provide counter arguments or alternative approaches.
God’s Agent 😇
Let this person go out and investigate all the ineffective processes and practices and have them compile a recommendation for remediation. Ensure that you give them the SLT (senior leadership team) objections to solve. No budget? Let this person find a way to solve this. No one wants the change? Let this person convince everyone else.
People who CARE about the organisation will highlight all the gaps and flaws they see around them. It is us who are misguided and who only see them as troublemakers.
It’s when troublemakers fall silent that you have to worry.
