Over the holidays, I was invited to two parties. Each had different set of people. Both of them were on the same day, at the same time, but in different locations which meant I couldn’t get to both.
As I thought about which party to attend, a new perspective dawned.
PARTY 1
👧 People I had previously coached and mentored
👦 They were HUGE fans of mine
👩 They always told me that I was their role model
👨 They were really nice and successful people, and I enjoyed their company
PARTY 2
💐 They were old friends
🌸 They had helped me in my ups and downs
💮 They were highly successful people
🌹 They were always brutally honest with my missteps
🌺 They had different perspectives from mine and interesting new ideas
🌼 I was a big FAN and ADMIRER of this circle of friends.
I decided to go to the party with the old friends because:
😉 There would be MUCH LESS admiration of me
😁 I admired THEM and wanted to be more like them
😝 They would happily point out any missteps I had taken that year
So I could go where I could just “be”, or I could go where I would “grow”.
On that occasion, I chose to go to an event where I knew I would be the one looking up in admiration of those around me.
As nice as it is being surrounded by people who admire you, sometimes you need to be around people you admire.
