Shame has its place in society. It’s that feeling of humiliation or distress that arises from having done something wrong.
For example, let’s say you just told off someone because you believed they were wrong. And then you find out that THEY were right all along, and it was YOU who was wrong. 😡😨😵
You’re filled with shame for telling off that person. And you swear to yourself that in the future, you won’t make such a mistake again.
See, that’s because you are decent person – and you’re using shame for effecting behaviour changes. You are a normal human being. ✅
Meanwhile, there are many, many folks who do something they ought to be ashamed about, and when they are called out on it, they double down and shamelessly brazen their way through it. ScoMo in Australia. Boris Johnson and Trump. Don’t be like them.
When you do something that fills you with shame, assess it and then USE it as a lever to CHANGE your behaviour.
By the way, there is no need to feel shame about things that don’t matter. Like overindulging on chocolates. That’s not a productive use of emotions.
