My friend told me about his colleague with whom he had just met. He said that this colleague was really nice and supportive in their 1:1 meeting.
However, he said that at the leadership session that afternoon, he was expecting his colleague to throw him under the bus – by asking him really tough questions in front of all the senior leaders.
He wondered why this colleague did that – and then answered his own question by suggesting that this colleague wanted to give the impression that they were leadership material, and they were seeking the admiration of all the senior people by asking hard questions.
I tried to be helpful by telling him that senior leaders are smart people – they would have picked up on this manipulative behaviour.
Do you know someone who does this, friends? How do you manage this colleague?
