What’s my number one rule for a presentation?

Understand what the audience wants to hear.

Friends, nbn’s Rise and Shine program aims to elevate the leadership behaviours, mindsets and practices of our women so that they have the confidence and tools to self-drive their careers.

One highly effective way to build confidence for a Rise and Shine participant (volunteer) to host and facilitate a session where we hear about the leadership journey of an EXCo member or other senior leader.

As part of coaching for this event,  I ask the volunteer host to draft a set of questions that they could ask the guest. Now keep in mind that for many of our sessions 50-60 women join for a collective learning session.

When I review the questions to be asked of the leader, I often find that the host misses the key ingredient of a successful session – and this is, failing to ask themselves this:

What does the audience want to know?

Most times, the questions are related to specific things that only the host is interested in, and they have failed to consider that the audience might want to hear something different entirely. Other times, the questions put forward would be of interest to one one segment of the audience.

So as part of my coaching, I help the host understand that vital for any presentation or discussion or talk, is the value the audience would get from the session.

The host is then gently guided to ask questions that the audience would find valuable.

So this is my number one rule for developing any talk or presentation.

Focus on what will be most impactful or valuable for the audience.

Thank you for reading my post friends.
