It’s 2024, here are two ways that your LinkedIn posts age you.

One sure-fire way to have an unproductive meeting.
So you have just finished a meeting, and as everyone meanders out of the room, one or two people hang back to discuss the meeting.
Ideas are put forth, opinions (usually negative) are shared and in worst cases, decisions are made on the spot.
Friends – if you find that this is happening, stop it immediately. ❌
The post-meeting meeting is:
☠ disrespectful to those who attended the original session
💀 ineffective because new information will need to be communicated to all
👹 counter-productive to efficient decision making.
Be brave and share your thoughts in the original meeting – with everyone there.
The post-meeting chat is non-inclusive behaviour. Just don’t do it.

A crucial life lesson to help yourself – as well as others
So here is something I’ve learnt recently. If your doctor prescribes you medication, please google the potential side effects from the medication.
Your doctor might tell you of the most obvious side effects, but as you are a unique being with your physiognomy shaped by your set of genetics and your particular health and lifestyle behaviours, some medication may impact you a little differently.
So, regardless of what your health professional tells you, the onus is on YOU to find out information for yourself. Start with googling side effects of your medication – and any effects from your combinations of medications. Then speak to your doctor to clarify concerns.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your medical professional knows everything. They don’t.
Also, make sure your team members are aware of this as well.

Friends, stop saying “it’s a first world problem”.
Here in Australia, sometimes when people talk about some of their problems, they are met with a “yeah, that’s a first world problem”.
This shuts down the conversation because it implies that the problem being discussed is so trivial, so banal that to even talk about it is to disrespect the people in the world with real issues.
Friends, if you ever catch yourself saying “first world problems” when someone is talking about their issues or challenges, stop it.
It’s disrespectful. This is a pseudo-intelligent riposte. People should be allowed to discuss their problems without someone DECIDING that the problem is not worth discussing.
For the record, there are some people who are whingers. This is Australian for people-who-COMPLAIN-all-the-time.
You have my permission to call them out for being whingers. No one likes whingers.

What’s a common misconception about you?
For me, it’s that I’m scary. 👻☠💀
Because I am intense/passionate/energetic/opinionated, and sometimes I ask hard questions, some people who don’t know me well think I’m intimidating or scary.
So what I do is try to be less intense or less passionate when meeting new people – to ensure they feel at ease.
I DON’T change my fundamental nature. I just dial down …. the extra. As and when needed.
What about you? Do you know what the most common misconception about you is? What are you doing to manage this? 😁😉😄

If you’re blessed, you probably have someone in your life who says to you: ❤️🧡 I love you. 💓💕
People leaders – do you ever say “Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions”?
If so, you may be depriving you and your team from coming up with creative ideas.
The thing is this. If you always expect your people to come to you with solutions, that’s exactly what they will do.
But here is a thought.
Sometimes, you WANT a diversity of perspectives on a given problem. And one way to get this is to outline the problem and then invite the team for creative ways to solve it.
So, be mindful of the consequences of always expecting people to come to you with solutions.
What bright ideas have you missed out on because someone has already done all the thinking?

What are you saving for a special occasion?
Managing up – by throwing people under the bus.
My friend told me about his colleague with whom he had just met. He said that this colleague was really nice and supportive in their 1:1 meeting.
However, he said that at the leadership session that afternoon, he was expecting his colleague to throw him under the bus – by asking him really tough questions in front of all the senior leaders.
He wondered why this colleague did that – and then answered his own question by suggesting that this colleague wanted to give the impression that they were leadership material, and they were seeking the admiration of all the senior people by asking hard questions.
I tried to be helpful by telling him that senior leaders are smart people – they would have picked up on this manipulative behaviour.
Do you know someone who does this, friends? How do you manage this colleague?

Do you believe everything you think?
Why? 🤔
When was the last time you actually questioned WHY you believe some of the things you do?
Perhaps it’s time to take a moment to refresh your beliefs. Like everything else, sometimes a revitalization of belief systems is necessary for growth.

1️⃣ If you are about to post an AI generated image, or you select a stock image to accompany your LinkedIn text, choose an image that shows:
✳ Diversity of people. Ask AI to make one of the figures from a minority group or select an image that shows a diversity of folks (age, ethnicity, gender etc)
2️⃣ Use appropriate language for 2024. Don’t say ‘we need more women in leadership’. Say instead that eg ‘leadership needs more diversity of thought or candidates from more diverse backgrounds.’
There are many ways to demonstrate your commitment to inclusion. But how you ACTUALLY THINK about inclusion comes through in the invisible ways that you may not even be aware about. And these things will date you.
Who wants to be a dinosaur in 2024, right?
